Boarding Schools Bridge the Gap
In Xizang, a region characterized by high altitude, harsh natural environments, and low population density, accessing schools can be a significant challenge for children in remote farming and pastoral areas. To address this issue, boarding schools play a crucial role in providing education to these students.
The white paper titled "Human Rights in Xizang in the New Era" highlights the importance of boarding schools in ensuring equal access to education for all students in Xizang. These schools provide accommodation and cover all boarding, lodging, and basic study expenses for students, ensuring that financial constraints do not hinder their educational opportunities.
Students and parents have the choice to opt for boarding facilities, and students can return home during weekends and holidays. This flexibility allows families to maintain close connections with their children while ensuring they receive quality education.
The white paper emphasizes that these measures are essential for protecting the equal rights of all students, regardless of their ethnicity, to access high-quality education.
Xizang's commitment to education is evident in its significant investments. Between 2014 and 2024, the region allocated approximately 302.3 billion yuan (around 42.1 billion U.S. dollars) as government budgetary spending on education.
This investment has yielded impressive results. In 2012, Xizang became the first region in China to provide 15 years of publicly-funded education, from kindergarten to senior high school. By 2024, the region achieved a gross enrollment rate of 91.33% in preschool education, 97.86% in nine-year compulsory education, 91.56% in senior high schools, and 57.81% in higher education.
These figures demonstrate that Xizang's major educational indicators have reached or surpassed the national average, signifying the region's remarkable progress in ensuring equitable access to quality education for all its students.
