Former MFA Director-General Gilbert Oh Sacked After Jail Sentence
Gilbert Oh Hin Kwan, a former director-general at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), has been dismissed from his position. The notice of his dismissal was published in the government gazette on Thursday, March 27th.
Oh was found guilty of providing false information to a public servant in April 2019. He had lied to his superior about the contents of a diplomatic bag, claiming that luxury watches and other items belonged to his father.
Both the prosecution and defense had requested fines for Oh. However, the district judge deemed a jail sentence more appropriate and sentenced him to one week in prison. The judge cited the potential damage to the credibility of MFA and the public service as a reason for the sentence.
Oh appealed the sentence, but his appeal was rejected by the High Court in February 2020. At the time, MFA confirmed that Oh was still an officer but on no-pay leave.
With his dismissal, Oh's employment with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has officially ended.

Disgraceful! How can someone in such a high position lie and get away with just a week in jail?
