Rugby Football Union CEO Bill Sweeney Survives No-Confidence Vote
Bill Sweeney, CEO of the Rugby Football Union (RFU), has successfully weathered a vote of no-confidence at Twickenham. The motion, brought forward by the Whole Game Union (WGU), failed to garner enough votes to trigger Sweeney's removal.
The vote, held on Thursday, saw 206 votes in favor of removing Sweeney, while 466 voted against and 36 abstained. A counter-motion presented by the RFU, aimed at granting the community game greater autonomy at the local level, received overwhelming support with 554 votes in favor, 127 against, and 24 abstentions.
The no-confidence motion stemmed from revelations last November that Sweeney had earned a significant bonus, totaling 1.1 million pounds, despite the RFU announcing record losses of nearly 40 million pounds and implementing redundancies. This revelation sparked backlash, leading to the formation of the WGU and the subsequent vote.
Following the vote, RFU interim chairman Bill Beaumont urged unity and a focus on the future of English rugby. He acknowledged the need to listen to members' concerns and take action, emphasizing that the time for division had passed.
Sweeney's survival in the face of this challenge suggests that he retains the support of a significant portion of the RFU membership. However, the vote also highlights the concerns within the rugby community regarding financial transparency and the need for greater engagement with the grassroots level of the sport. Moving forward, Sweeney and the RFU will need to address these concerns and work towards rebuilding trust and unity within the organization.

I'm glad the counter-motion about local autonomy passed. It will give the grassroots game a much-needed boost.

Sweeney survives despite massive bonus and record losses? This is a disgrace to English rugby.

The RFU needs to be more transparent about its finances. We deserve to know how our money is being spent.

The RFU is out of touch with the grassroots. This vote shows they only care about themselves.
