Shanghai Experiences Early Heatwave Followed by Cold Snap
Shanghai has witnessed an unusually early heatwave, with temperatures reaching 30 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, March 28th, 2023. This marks the earliest recorded 30-degree day in the city since 1933, according to The Paper.
However, this warm spell will be short-lived. A cold wave is expected to hit Shanghai within the next two days, bringing a significant temperature drop of 12-17 degrees Celsius. Lows are predicted to reach 8 degrees Celsius.
The Shanghai Xujiahui Meteorological Station recorded a temperature of 30.4 degrees Celsius by 12:40 pm on Tuesday. This is the second-highest daily temperature ever recorded in March in Shanghai's history. Temperatures in Pudong and Minhang also exceeded 30 degrees Celsius and were still rising.
Typically, Shanghai's first day with temperatures exceeding 30 degrees Celsius occurs in late April or early May. This early occurrence in March is rare. In the station's 150-year history, only two previous instances - March 20, 1933, and March 31, 1945 - had recorded temperatures reaching or exceeding this mark.
Starting Wednesday, the weather will turn cloudy with occasional showers. As cold air moves into Shanghai, temperatures will drop rapidly, with lows falling below 10 degrees Celsius by Friday.

Can you imagine how much energy is being wasted with people constantly turning on their AC and then their heaters? 😩
