Forest Fires Rage in Japan, Threatening Homes and Power Supply
Massive forest fires that erupted in Ehime and Okayama prefectures on March 23 continued to rage on March 26, forcing widespread evacuations and threatening a power blackout.
In Ehime Prefecture, a major forest fire continued to spread for the fourth day on March 26. The fire had scorched over 306 hectares of land and destroyed six residential buildings and two warehouses. Evacuation orders were issued for nearly 6,000 people, and over 250 had already evacuated their homes.
The fire also posed a significant threat to the power supply in Imabari city. If the fire spreads further, it could potentially cut off power to almost the entire city. Shikoku Electric Power Transmission and Distribution Co. warned that up to 76,000 households could be left without power if the fire reaches a critical juncture.
In Okayama city, a forest fire that broke out on March 23 continued to burn for the fourth day. The fire had spread over 423 hectares, but no new damage to homes was reported. Five people remained at an evacuation center as of March 26.
A forest fire in Miyazaki Prefecture was being contained as of the evening of March 26. The fire had encompassed an area of approximately 50 hectares, but no smoke was detected at the site, and no damage to people or buildings had been confirmed. An evacuation order for 70 households remained in effect.
The fire had caused the postponement of the end-of-the-school-year ceremony at Kagamisu Elementary School, which is located about 1 km away from the fire site. The school's assistant principal expressed relief that the smoke had subsided on March 26.
A resident of Kagamisu who evacuated with his family described the harrowing experience of seeing smoke and soot fill the air. He expressed concern for his grandmother, who had to be hospitalized due to difficulty staying overnight at the shelter.
The ongoing forest fires in Japan highlight the devastating impact of such events on communities and infrastructure. Firefighters continue to battle the blazes, and residents remain on high alert as the situation continues to unfold.
