No Scolding, Just Joy

In Munakata, Fukuoka Prefecture, a unique volleyball tournament unfolds. Here, coaches aren't allowed to scold their players. This innovative approach, spearheaded by former national team member Naomi Masuko, aims to eliminate violence, verbal abuse, and harassment in sports coaching.

Masuko, who experienced harsh coaching herself, envisioned a space where children could enjoy sports without fear. The tournament began as a small elementary school event but has since expanded to multiple sports and prefectures, influencing coaching philosophies nationwide.

Koubukuro Junior volleyball club, champions of this year's no-scolding tournament, also clinched victory at the national championship, proving that encouragement, not discipline, leads to success. Coach Yuji Horita's approach focuses on praising effort and challenges, tailoring his guidance to each player's personality.

The tournament's origins lie in a tragic event. Miyoko and Shinji Kitagawa lost their two children in a drowning accident. Both children loved volleyball, and the couple established a team for other children. However, the pressure to win led them to adopt intense training and harsh coaching.
