The Inhumanity of Killing Journalists in Gaza
The recent killing of Mohammed Mansour, a young journalist working for Asahi Shimbun in Gaza, has sparked outrage and condemnation. Mansour, a father supporting his family amidst the ongoing conflict, was killed in what is believed to be an Israeli missile attack on his home. This tragedy comes just days after the death of another journalist, this time with Al-Jazeera, raising serious concerns about the deliberate targeting of reporters.
The Committee to Protect Journalists, an international non-governmental organization, has called for an independent international investigation into the deaths of Mansour and his colleague. This call comes amidst reports of over 200 journalists killed since the start of the conflict between Israel and Hamas in October 2023. Despite wearing bulletproof vests marked "Press" and traveling in clearly marked vehicles, journalists continue to be targeted in lethal attacks.
The Israeli Defense Forces justify these attacks by labeling the victims as "members of terrorist organizations," a claim that has been met with widespread condemnation. A special reporter with the United Nations has condemned the Israeli action as "a ploy to silence the critical press, which constitutes a war crime."
The fierce fighting in Gaza has turned many civilians into collateral damage, with U.N. organs pointing out violations of international humanitarian law. Despite this, the Israeli government continues to refuse access to foreign media in combat zones.
Journalists like Mansour, who bravely continue to report from Gaza, are driven by a sense of crisis. They understand that unless they continue to report what is happening, the rest of the world will not know the true extent of the suffering. For them, simply staying alive is a daily challenge, yet they remain committed to their calling. To stifle their efforts is an unforgivable act.
The recent resumption of fighting in Gaza has shattered the fragile truce and pushed the death toll past 50,000. Each of these victims had a life, a family, and a story. The images coming out of Gaza offer a glimpse into the harsh reality of the battleground, a reality that cannot be fully grasped by simply looking at the numbers.
"I feel (excited) like a kid on the eve of a big festival."
"The Israeli troops are threatening the people of Gaza, saying there is no such thing as a safe place for them. And that applies to us at the hospital and to you journalists, too."
While we mourn the loss of our dear colleague, we will not turn our eyes away from Gaza. We will continue to strive to ensure that the voices of the people of Gaza are heard, and we will continue to call for an end to this devastating war.

Threatening journalists undermines freedom of press, but it doesn't justify Hamas' actions or its use of civilians as shields.

Hamas uses civilians as human shields, making it difficult for Israel to avoid civilian casualties.

The international community has a responsibility to protect journalists and ensure their safety in conflict zones.

It's important to be objective when reporting on such complex conflicts, and this text seems biased towards the Palestinians.

Investigating every journalist's death is unrealistic and impractical, especially in the midst of an ongoing conflict.
