Gender-Based Violence Rises in Ukraine Amidst War and Darkness
The ongoing war in Ukraine has significantly intensified gender-based violence, according to a new study by UNFPA, the United Nations sexual and reproductive health agency. The report, based on the experiences of hundreds of women and girls across the country, paints a grim picture of increased violence both inside and outside the home.
Darkness and Displacement Fuel Violence
Damage to Ukraine's energy infrastructure has led to frequent power cuts, plunging streets into darkness and leaving women vulnerable to attacks. Many women report feeling unsafe walking outside, particularly after nightfall, with limited lighting and the constant fear of being followed or abused.
The war has also displaced millions of Ukrainians, forcing families to live in crowded shared housing. This lack of privacy and close quarters contribute to domestic violence and increase the risk of sexual abuse. The report highlights the difficulty survivors face in leaving these situations due to the lack of available housing.
Intimate Partner Violence and Sexual Exploitation
The study reveals a disturbing rise in intimate partner and domestic violence within households. Women report higher levels of stress within families and communities, with increased alcohol consumption contributing to the violence. Additionally, women are experiencing violence from partners and husbands returning from the war zone, often traumatized and struggling to cope.
The report also sheds light on the use of conflict-related sexual violence as a weapon of war. Severe types of violence carried out by Russian forces have been documented, with the UN commission of inquiry on Ukraine concluding that Russian authorities committed war crimes of rape and sexual violence against women in detention.
Urgent Need for Support and Action
The UNFPA is calling for increased and targeted investment in gender-based violence programs and specialized services for survivors. However, the report acknowledges that progress is limited while the war continues.
The study emphasizes the crucial need to listen to the voices of women and girls to inform actions, policies, and humanitarian interventions moving forward. Supporting women's mental and emotional healing is essential to achieving justice, which ultimately depends upon lasting peace.
