The Somei-Yoshino cherry trees, a beloved symbol of spring in Japan, bloomed in the cities of Kochi and Kumamoto on Sunday, marking the earliest blooming in the country this spring. The Japan Meteorological Agency, which closely monitors the blooming of these iconic trees, confirmed the early arrival of spring in these southern cities.
The blooming date in Kochi remained the same as last year, while Kumamoto witnessed the delicate pink blossoms emerge three days earlier than in 2022. This early blooming is attributed to the warm and sunny weather that has prevailed in recent weeks, with high atmospheric pressure bringing clear skies and temperatures reaching 25 degrees Celsius or higher in many parts of eastern and western Japan. The city of Hyuga in Miyazaki Prefecture experienced the highest temperature, with the mercury soaring to 28.3 degrees Celsius.
The early blooming of the cherry trees is a welcome sight for many Japanese people, who eagerly await the arrival of spring and the opportunity to enjoy the fleeting beauty of these delicate blossoms. The cherry blossom season, known as "sakura" in Japanese, is a time for celebration and reflection, as people gather under the blooming trees to picnic, socialize, and appreciate the ephemeral nature of life.
While the early blooming in Kochi and Kumamoto is a sign of the changing seasons, it is important to note that the blooming dates can vary significantly from year to year depending on weather conditions. In some years, the cherry trees may bloom as early as late March, while in other years, the blossoms may not appear until mid-April.

I was looking forward to seeing the blossoms in full bloom later in the season. 😩

This early bloom is going to make it harder for people to travel to see the blossoms. ✈️
