Pope Francis was discharged from Rome's Gemelli hospital on Sunday after a five-week stay for pneumonia treatment. This marked his first public appearance since February 14th, when he waved to well-wishers from a balcony just before his departure.
The 88-year-old pontiff was hospitalized on February 14th with a severe respiratory infection, which became the most serious health crisis of his 12-year papacy. His doctors stated that it would still take "a lot of time" for his aging body to fully recover, and prescribed him two additional months of rest at the Vatican.
Francis left the hospital shortly after noon on Sunday, accompanied by a police escort through Rome. He appeared on a balcony just before leaving, using a wheelchair as he has for several years. With a smile, he waved to the crowd of well-wishers gathered outside.
His face appeared swollen, and he spoke briefly with a feeble voice to thank a member of the crowd who had brought yellow flowers. This was only the second time the public had seen him during his hospital stay, the first being a photo released by the Vatican last week showing him at prayer in a hospital chapel.
In the moments before his appearance, the crowd of hundreds chanted "Francis, Francis, Francis.

We are praying for his full recovery, but even in his illness, he continues to be a source of strength for the Church.

His voice may be feeble, but his message remains clear. He continues to call for peace, justice, and compassion.

Swollen face and a feeble voice? Doesn't inspire much confidence. Maybe it's time to consider retirement?
