Senator Daines Visits China Amidst Trade Tensions
U.S. Senator Steve Daines, a Republican from Montana and a staunch supporter of President Donald Trump, met with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng in Beijing on Saturday, March 22, 2025. This visit marked Daines' sixth trip to China and came at a time of heightened tensions between the two countries over trade tariffs and the illegal fentanyl trade.
Daines, who previously worked for Procter & Gamble in Guangzhou, expressed his belief in constructive dialogue and highlighted the importance of discussing critical issues between the U.S. and China. He also voiced President Trump's call for China to stop the flow of fentanyl precursors and expressed hope for further high-level talks.
Vice Premier He, in response, emphasized China's opposition to the politicization of economic and trade issues and expressed willingness for candid dialogue based on mutual respect, equality, and mutual benefits. He also stressed the potential for partnership and friendship between the two countries.
Daines' visit followed a trip to Vietnam where he met with top leaders. His trip to China was coordinated with the White House and aimed to advance President Trump's "America First" agenda. Daines also planned to discuss curbing fentanyl production and distribution, reducing the trade deficit, and ensuring fair market access for Montana farmers and producers.
Despite the ongoing trade tensions, both sides expressed a commitment to cooperation and dialogue. The U.S. and China have held multiple high-level meetings since early 2024 to promote cooperation on fentanyl-related issues. China remains committed to cooperation but opposes U.S. sanctions and pressure on the matter.

Daines should be focused on helping Americans, not cozying up to China!

This trip will only embolden China. They see it as a sign of weakness from the US.

Daines is clueless about how to deal with China. This trip is just going to make things worse.

All talk, no action! This trip won't change anything.

China needs to be punished for their unfair trade practices, not given more opportunities to exploit us.

Another pointless trip for Daines. What a waste of taxpayer money!
