March 19-21, 2023

A US airstrike on March 19 hit an under-construction events hall in Sanaa, injuring seven women and two children. This comes amidst the ongoing US airstrikes against Yemen, which began on March 15 and target the Houthi group. The strikes have sparked mass protests in Yemen and retaliatory attacks on shipping in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.

Israel resumed its ground assault in Gaza on March 18, retaking the central "Netzarim Corridor" and shattering the area with airstrikes that killed over 400 Palestinians. This comes after the collapse of the latest ceasefire.

Heathrow Airport was closed on March 21 after a massive fire at an electrical substation knocked out power to the airport and thousands of homes. The fire disrupted flight schedules around the world, with several flights being diverted. The cause of the fire remains unknown.

Canada's largest Muslim organization is outraged over a bill introduced by the Quebec government that would ban headscarves for school support staff and students in public schools and school service centres. The ban also covers face coverings, with the explanatory notes stating that Muslim girls will "have their face uncovered when they are on the premises placed at the disposal of a school." The National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) says the law is an attack on the fundamental rights of their community and unfairly targets hijab-wearing Muslims.

The proposed headscarf ban in Quebec is a domestic issue that should be decided by the elected officials of that province. Respecting the democratic process is essential even if we disagree with the policy.

While threats and harassment are unacceptable, confronting government officials in such a confrontational manner can also be seen as inappropriate provocation.

While tragedies like the civilian casualties in Yemen and Gaza are heartbreaking, condemning one side without acknowledging the actions of the other risks furthering the conflict.

Condemning the discriminatory headscarf ban proposed by the Quebec government. This is an unacceptable attack on religious freedom and blatant Islamophobia.

Bans on religious attire like the one proposed in Quebec violate basic human rights and promote discrimination. We need to fight for inclusivity and respect for all faiths.

Israel's actions in Gaza are a clear case of excessive force and disregard for human life. The international community must condemn these atrocities.

The harassment of Assemblymember Mamdani is a chilling reminder of the racism and intolerance that exist in our society. We must stand up against hate and defend the right to free speech.

Civilian casualties in war are always a tragedy. We mourn the loss of innocent lives in both Yemen and Gaza and call for a ceasefire and a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
