China, Iran, and Russia Hold Joint Naval Drills in the Gulf of Oman
In March 2024, the navies of China, Iran, and Russia participated in a joint naval exercise in the Gulf of Oman. The exercise, dubbed "Security Belt-2025," was held near Iran's Chabahar Port and involved training courses in maritime target strike, visit, board, search, and seizure (VBSS), damage control, and joint search and rescue operations.
The exercise aimed to deepen military cooperation and trust among the participating countries and demonstrate their commitment to regional security and maritime safety. It also served as an opportunity to exchange information on maritime rescue and relief operations and share operational and tactical experiences.
This was the fifth joint naval exercise between China, Iran, and Russia since 2019, highlighting the growing cooperation between the three countries in the maritime domain. The exercise took place in the strategically important Gulf of Oman, a crucial gateway between the Strait of Hormuz and the Indian Ocean, making it a vital pathway for energy shipping.
China sent the destroyer Baotou and the replenishment ship Gaoyouhu from the PLA Navy's 47th escort task group to participate in the exercise. The Baotou is a Type 052D guided missile destroyer, and the Gaoyouhu is a Type 903A comprehensive replenishment ship. These warships are capable of diverse military operations and have strong combat power and endurance.
The trilateral exercise was not targeted at any third party and served as a significant contribution to peace and stability in the world. The participation of China, Iran, and Russia, key forces for peace, underscores their commitment to maintaining regional and global security.
