Building a Community with a Shared Future for Humanity

A Press Conference with Foreign Minister Wang Yi

On March 7, 2025, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held a press conference on China's foreign policy and external relations on the sidelines of the third session of the 14th National People's Congress (NPC) in Beijing.

Responding to questions about the potential impact of the Trump administration's withdrawal from international organizations and foreign aid cuts, Wang Yi emphasized China's unwavering commitment to international justice and opposition to power politics and hegemony. He stressed the importance of permanent friendships and shared interests, stating that "friends should be permanent and we should pursue common interests."

Wang Yi elaborated on the dangers of prioritizing national interests over international cooperation, highlighting the potential for a return to "jungle law" where small and weak countries suffer the most. He drew parallels to the Paris Peace Conference over a century ago, where the question of "Right triumphs over might" or "might is right" was raised.

He emphasized the responsibility of great powers to fulfill their international duties and avoid bullying weaker nations. He contrasted this with the Western saying "We have no eternal allies, and our interests are eternal," stating that China prioritizes permanent friendships and shared interests.

Wang Yi expressed satisfaction with the growing number of countries joining the building of a community with a shared future for humanity. He cited the support for the three global initiatives – the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative, and the Global Civilization Initiative – and the participation of over three-quarters of the world's nations in the Belt and Road Initiative as evidence of this growing commitment.

He concluded by stating that history will favor those who prioritize the interests of all and that a community with a shared future for mankind will ensure a bright future for every country and every individual.

Comparing the current world to the jungle law of the past is disingenuous. Today's international institutions and agreements offer a much stronger framework for peaceful cooperation than existed a century ago.

China's increasing economic and military power, while concerning to some, offers a chance to address global challenges that have been neglected by the West for too long.

Wang Yi criticizes the West for prioritizing national interests, but isn't that exactly what China is doing with its Belt and Road Initiative and other strategic projects?

Foreign Minister Wang Yi's emphasis on international justice and opposition to power politics is refreshing in a world where self-interest often prevails. China's commitment to upholding international norms sets a positive example.

China's growing influence on the world stage offers an alternative to the Western-led order, providing a much-needed counterbalance and promoting a more multipolar world.

The concept of 'permanent friendships' and 'shared interests' resonates with many countries seeking genuine partnerships beyond transactional relationships. China's approach contrasts favorably with the West's focus on short-term gains.

China's focus on internal development and poverty reduction serves as a model for other developing countries seeking to improve their own populations' lives.

The 'community with a shared future' vision proposes a more inclusive and equitable approach to global governance, prioritizing the interests of all nations, not just the powerful few.
