The General Services Administration (GSA) has developed a new artificial intelligence (AI) tool for government use. The tool is designed to support staff at the agency in their regular, daily work. GSA plans to roll out the tool to other federal agencies in the near future.
The development of the AI tool was driven by concerns within the GSA about the risks of using commercially available AI tools. The tool was built internally to ensure that it meets government security requirements.
GSA is working to see how the AI tool fits into the daily workflow of federal workers. The agency is encouraging, but not requiring, staff to use the tool.
GSA's Acting Administrator and Deputy Administrator Stephen Ehikian said in a release, "The opportunity to incorporate generative AI into Government work is akin to giving a personal computer to every worker. We are just at the start of our journey using this new tool, but the demand for this technology exists across GSA and the broader government."
The Trump administration has been supportive of the self-developed AI tool. The administration believes that the tool will help to make the government more efficient.

Building the tool internally gives the government more control over its security and privacy.

We need to be very careful about how we develop and use AI, and this government initiative raises serious concerns.

Using AI for 'regular, daily work' could free up government employees to focus on more complex and important tasks.
