A Multifaceted Exploration
China's Tianwen-2 mission, scheduled for launch in the first half of 2023, promises to be a multifaceted exploration of our solar system. The mission will embark on a journey with multiple objectives, including a flyby of the intriguing asteroid 2016 HO3, sample collection and return, and a close encounter with the main-belt comet 311P.
The launch facility at the Xichang Satellite Launch Center is currently in excellent condition, and preparations for pre-launch tests are progressing smoothly. The China National Space Administration (CNSA) confirmed the mission's arrival at the launch center on February 20th, 2023.
Asteroid 2016 HO3, nicknamed "Earth's quasi-satellite," orbits near Earth's path and shares a similar revolution period. This unique celestial body holds immense scientific value as it retains primitive information from the early solar system, making it a valuable "living fossil" for studying the system's composition, formation, and evolution.
The main-belt comet 311P, located in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, presents a fascinating blend of characteristics. It exhibits traits of both traditional comets and asteroids, making it a subject of great scientific interest.
