China urges Canada to respect judicial sovereignty in drug-related cases
China has urged Canada to stop interfering in its judicial sovereignty, emphasizing the shared responsibility of all countries in combating drug-related crimes. This statement comes in response to reports quoting Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly's concerns regarding the execution of four Canadian citizens in China earlier this year on drug-related charges.
Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning, during a regular news conference, reiterated China's commitment to the rule of law and equal treatment of all defendants, regardless of nationality. She emphasized that the cases were handled impartially and strictly in accordance with the law, guaranteeing the legal rights of the individuals involved and the consular rights of the Canadian side.
"Whoever violates the law of China must be held accountable in accordance with the law," the Chinese embassy in Canada stated, as quoted by CBC News. The embassy further highlighted the severity of drug-related crimes, emphasizing their detrimental impact on society. They clarified that the facts and evidence in the cases involving the Canadian nationals were clear and substantial.
The embassy concluded by urging the Canadian side to respect the rule of law and China's judicial sovereignty, refrain from making irresponsible remarks, and work collaboratively with China to promote the improvement and development of bilateral relations through concrete actions.

Boycott China! We must show China that their actions have consequences. We must boycott their goods and services until they change their ways.

This is a political issue, not a human rights issue. Canada is using this tragedy to score political points.

Shameful! This execution is a stain on China's reputation. They should be ashamed of themselves for carrying out this barbaric act.

China has the right to enforce its laws. Just like any other country, China has the right to punish those who break its laws, regardless of their nationality.

The international community should respect China's decision. This is a matter of national sovereignty.
