XPeng Aims for Level 3 Autonomy, Likens it to an "iPhone 4 Moment" for Cars
XPeng's CEO, He Xiaopeng, believes the company's pursuit of level three autonomy is a pivotal moment for the automotive industry, similar to the impact of the iPhone 4. He envisions a future where self-driving cars are widely adopted, even by his parents' generation.
"We are actually in a new generation of technology advancement," Xiaopeng stated during the company's earnings call. "This is going to trigger a wider adoption of smart driving for the whole society." He believes level three autonomy, where cars can handle most driving tasks but still require human intervention in emergencies, will be a key driver of this adoption.
XPeng plans to be the first in China to offer level three self-driving cars in the second half of this year. Xiaopeng claims that XPeng and Tesla are the only carmakers capable of providing such an experience without relying on high-definition maps or light detection.
Despite strong growth in deliveries and revenue, XPeng remains unprofitable. However, the company aims to break even by the end of 2025, which would make it the first Chinese EV maker to achieve profitability solely through EV sales.
XPeng is also expanding internationally, having recently launched in several European countries. Xiaopeng expects international sales to nearly double this year and eventually reach parity with sales in China by 2034.

XPeng, get real. Level 3 autonomy is still far away, and calling it an 'iPhone 4 moment' is just hype.
