Controversy and Protests Erupt over Proposed Reforms of Religious Property Management in India

Controversy and Protests

The Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2024, aimed at reforming the management of Waqf properties in India, has sparked controversy and protests from the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB).

Jagadambika Pal, BJP MP and Chairman of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on the Bill, criticized the AIMPLB's planned protest, claiming it could create divisions and challenge Parliament's authority. He stated that the committee had considered AIMPLB's concerns and incorporated them into the report.

AIMPLB spokesperson Syed Qasim Rasool Ilyas countered that the government aimed to create divisions between Hindus and Muslims and incite unrest. He argued that the Bill would deprive Waqf properties of special protection and lead to the loss of unregistered properties.

AIMPLB General Secretary Fazlur Rahim Mujaddidi expressed disappointment that the government had not heeded their concerns despite attempts to engage through democratic means. He emphasized that Muslims desired development but felt the Bill would hinder this goal.

The JPC tabled its report on the Bill in Parliament on February 13, 2024, amidst opposition. The Bill aims to address issues like mismanagement, corruption, and encroachments plaguing Waqf properties through digitization, enhanced audits, improved transparency, and legal mechanisms to reclaim illegally occupied properties.

The controversy surrounding the Bill highlights the complex and sensitive nature of religious property management in India. While the government aims to improve transparency and accountability, concerns remain regarding potential negative impacts on the Muslim community.

BJP's mismanagement of other religious endowments is proof enough. Giving them control of Waqf will lead to massive corruption!

We need to trust the experts on the JPC who have addressed the concerns raised. This bill is a positive step forward.

Development goals should not be seen as separate from religious aims. This bill can help achieve both simultaneously.

No matter how they sugarcoat it, this bill only leads to taking away control of our Waqf! We will resist this undemocratic move!

Waqf mismanagement has affected all communities, not just Muslims. Addressing it is in everyone's interest.

Let's not fall for divisive rhetoric on this issue. This bill focuses on improving the system for the Muslim community itself.

Digitization of Waqf records will streamline the system and prevent fraud. This is a welcome change for improved efficiency.

How dare the BJP government interfere in Waqf Board management? This is a clear attempt to divide Hindus and Muslims!
