Pro-Khalistani Leader's Associates Released, Two Arrested in Punjab

Seven Associates of Pro-Khalistani Leader Amritpal Singh to be Released from Assam Jail

Seven associates of jailed Lok Sabha MP and pro-Khalistani leader Amritpal Singh will be released from Assam's Dibrugarh jail and brought back to Punjab. The decision comes after the Punjab government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, decided not to extend their detention under the National Security Act (NSA).

The seven individuals were detained in connection with the 2023 Ajnala Police Station attack incident and have been lodged in the Dibrugarh jail for the past two years. They are identified as Basant Singh, Bhagwant Singh Bajekhana, Gurmeet Singh Bukkanwala, Sarabjit Kalsi, Ranjeet Kalsi, Gurinder Pal Singh Gurri Aujla, Harjeet Singh alias Chacha, and Kulwant Singh.

Deputy Inspector General (Border Range) Satinder Singh confirmed the release and stated that the individuals will be brought back to Punjab on arrest remand. They will be further investigated in connection with the Ajnala incident.

Amritpal Singh, who won the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Punjab's Khadoor Sahib parliamentary constituency as an independent candidate, is originally a resident of Jallu Kheda village in Amritsar. He used to live in Dubai before returning to Punjab in 2022 after the death of Punjabi actor Deep Sidhu. Upon his return, he became the chief of Deep Sidhu's pro-Khalistani organization, Waris Punjab De.

He was arrested from Moga's Rode village in February 2023 after he and his supporters staged a protest at the Ajnala police station and clashed with police personnel in an attempt to free one of his aides, who was taken into custody for making inflammatory and pro-Khalistan statements.

In a separate incident, the police arrested two individuals in connection with a firing incident reported at the Mehta Police Station. The arrest of one more person is still pending. One of the arrested individuals, Bishamberjit Singh, attempted to escape police custody and opened fire, injuring a policeman. Bishamberjit has been admitted for treatment. The police are investigating both cases.

What about the families of the victims of Khalistani violence? Their pain is not acknowledged by this decision.

This is not about religion, it is about law and order. No one is above the law, not even Khalistani leaders.
