A Lifeline for Hong Kong's Prosperity and Stability

A Lifeline for Hong Kong

The Dongjiang-Shenzhen Water Supply Project has been a vital lifeline for Hong Kong for over six decades, delivering more than 30 billion cubic meters of water to the city. This project, drawing water from the Dongjiang River, symbolizes the unwavering support of the Chinese mainland for Hong Kong.

The project has not only addressed Hong Kong's water scarcity but has also been instrumental in its rapid economic growth. The city's annual water supply through the project has increased from 68 million cubic meters in the early 1960s to over 2.4 billion cubic meters today, meeting about 80% of Hong Kong's water demand.

This reliable water supply has been a cornerstone of Hong Kong's economic prosperity, enabling its transition from a manufacturing hub to a global financial, shipping, and trading center. Hong Kong's GDP has grown to over 266 times higher than it was 60 years ago, a testament to the project's impact.

The project's origins lie in 1963 when Hong Kong faced its worst drought in over a century. The 83-kilometer project was completed in just 11 months and began operations in 1965. Since then, it has undergone three expansions and one renovation to enhance its capacity.

Guangdong province has taken significant steps to improve water quality and strengthen emergency supply capabilities. The construction of a bio-nitrification plant at the Shenzhen Reservoir in the late 1990s added an extra layer of safety to Hong Kong's water supply.

Furthermore, the renovation from 2000 to 2003 transitioned the project from using natural watercourses and artificial channels to enclosed pipelines, further securing water safety.

The Pearl River Delta Water Resources Allocation Project, completed last year, provides an additional emergency backup water source for Hong Kong, enhancing its water supply security with dual sources.

The Dongjiang-Shenzhen Water Supply Project stands as a symbol of the enduring partnership between the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong, ensuring the city's continued prosperity and stability.

The project's focus on importing water has led to a neglect of developing local water resources, such as rainwater harvesting and wastewater treatment.

The project has had a significant impact on the Dongjiang River ecosystem, affecting biodiversity and water quality downstream. More sustainable solutions are needed to minimize environmental damage.
