Chengdu Unveils Torch for 2025 World Games
With just over five months to go before the 12th World Games kick off in Chengdu, Sichuan province, organizers have unveiled the event's official torch. This marks a significant milestone for the Games, as it's the first time in the competition's history that a torch relay will take place.
The torch, aptly named "Zhumeng" which translates to "chasing dreams," embodies the spirit of the Games and the aspirations of the athletes. Its design draws inspiration from Sichuan's rich cultural heritage and natural beauty, incorporating elements from the region's renowned archaeological sites.
The torch's shape is reminiscent of bamboo, a plant native to Sichuan, and the Grand Bronze Standing Figure unearthed at the Sanxingdui archaeological site. The top of the torch resembles a tender bamboo shoot with two buds extending outward, symbolizing China's openness to the world. The nozzle, modeled after a sun-shaped crown discovered at the Jinsha archaeological site, represents Chengdu's deep cultural roots and the athletes' pursuit of excellence.
The unveiling ceremony was met with excitement from both local residents and international visitors. Sam Francis, an international student from Ghana who attended the event, expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming Games and the opportunity to experience Chengdu's vibrant culture.
The 12th World Games, scheduled for August 7th to 17th, will see thousands of athletes from around the world compete in 35 sports, including archery, kayaking, gymnastics, breakdancing, and rock climbing. The Games will also feature lesser-known sports such as fistball and jujitsu, as well as the debut of cheerleading and sambo. As the first city on the Chinese mainland to host the event, Chengdu is poised to showcase its unique charm and sporting prowess to the world.

The organizers mention the inclusion of lesser-known sports like fistball and jujitsu, but what about the exclusion of other popular sports? Seems biased.

Ugh, another gigantic torch relay for a sporting event. Do we really need all this carbon footprint for a torch?

The torch looks like a weird mix of a bamboo plant and an ancient artifact. Not sure how I feel about it.
