A Powerhouse of Winter Sports Talent
Heilongjiang, a province in Northeast China, has a rich history in winter sports and boasts unparalleled ice and snow resources. This has led to the continuous development of exceptional winter sports talent, according to officials.
The province has produced 15 Winter Olympic champions, including renowned names like Yang Yang, Wang Meng, Shen Xue, Zhao Hongbo, Zhang Hong, and Gao Tingyu. Additionally, Harbin and Qitaihe cities have been recognized as "Cities of Olympic Champions" by the Chinese Olympic Committee.
Heilongjiang encourages different regions to leverage their strengths in specific winter sports. Qitaihe specializes in short-track speed skating, Qiqihar in ice hockey, Yichun in curling, Hegang in alpine skiing, and Jixi in cross-country skiing, forming a unique three-tier system for talent development.
The province has established 32 national-level and 24 provincial-level ice and snow talent bases. It also prioritizes promoting winter sports among the younger generation.
From 2016 to 2024, over 20,500 schools in Heilongjiang conducted ice and snow activities, engaging over 15 million individuals. Winter sports have become a core focus in the curriculum, with 774 schools offering specialized winter sports programs. Instructors provide 630 hours of annual teaching, ensuring each student masters at least one winter sport skill.
The province hosts numerous ice and snow sporting events, including the Heilongjiang Provincial Student Winter Games, attracting 440,000 student participants annually.
Heilongjiang also places significant emphasis on the development of the ice and snow equipment industry. The province houses numerous ice and snow equipment manufacturers, producing various equipment like ice skates, skis, cable cars, and snowmaking machines. Quality ice and snow equipment manufacturing enterprises and industrial parks have established themselves in Heilongjiang.
With the increasing demand for ice and snow equipment due to the ongoing Asian Winter Games and the national goal of engaging 300 million people in winter sports, Heilongjiang is poised to capitalize on this opportunity. The province plans to support the industry through technological innovation, product R&D, brand building, and improved standards, leading the industry's advancement.
