China's Hopes for Canada's New Government and Trade Dispute
China expressed its hope that the newly elected Canadian government, led by Mark Carney, will adopt a positive and pragmatic approach to improving bilateral relations. During a press conference, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning congratulated Carney on his victory and reiterated China's commitment to fostering ties based on mutual respect, equality, and mutual benefit.
However, the relationship between the two countries is currently strained due to a trade dispute. China recently imposed additional tariffs on some Canadian imports following an anti-discrimination probe. Mao defended the move, stating that it was necessary and justified in response to Canada's discriminatory restrictions on certain Chinese imports. These restrictions, according to China, violate World Trade Organization rules, disrupt trade order, and infringe upon China's legitimate rights and interests.
Mao urged Canada to take concrete steps to rectify the situation and ensure a fair and non-discriminatory environment for trade and cooperation between businesses in both countries. The dispute stems from Canada's tariff hikes on Chinese electric vehicles, steel, and aluminum last year, which prompted China's anti-discrimination probe.
The new tariffs, effective March 20th, will include a 100% duty on rapeseed oil, oil cakes, and peas imported from Canada, while aquatic products and pork will face an additional 25% tariff. This decision follows China's first anti-discrimination probe into foreign countries and regions, which concluded that Canada's trade restrictions constitute discriminatory practices.

😠 This dispute shows that China is not a reliable trading partner. It makes me question their commitment to free trade.

👎 This is blatant protectionism from China. It's bad for global trade and undermines fair competition.
