Zelensky, Trump, and the Ukraine Conflict
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on Monday for crucial talks with the United States. The meeting, the first high-level gathering between the two countries since a disastrous encounter in February, will focus on determining whether Ukraine is willing to make concessions to end the ongoing conflict with Russia.
Zelensky's team includes key officials like Andriy Yermak, Pavlo Palisa, Andrii Sybiha, and Rustem Umerov. However, Zelensky himself will not be present at the talks with U.S. officials. Instead, he is expected to meet with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who has played a mediating role in the conflict.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio also arrived in Jeddah on Monday, leading a delegation that includes Trump's national security advisor, Mike Waltz. Their goal is to advance Trump's objective of ending the war and to assess Ukraine's commitment to a realistic peace.
The talks come amidst the ongoing debate over a minerals deal between the U.S. and Ukraine. Kyiv seeks a U.S. security guarantee in exchange for access to certain mineral resources. While both sides have expressed renewed interest in the deal, no signing has yet occurred. Trump has emphasized that he wants Ukraine to demonstrate a genuine desire for peace before signing the agreement.
Saudi Arabia has positioned itself as a potential venue for peace negotiations between Ukraine and Russia, even hosting talks between the two countries in February. The kingdom has also expressed its continued commitment to pursuing a lasting peace in the region.
Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov acknowledged the political will of both Russia and the U.S. to improve their relations. He emphasized that while the path to restoring ties is long and challenging, the presidents' commitment is a positive step.
The outcome of the Jeddah talks remains uncertain, but they represent a critical opportunity to assess Ukraine's willingness to compromise and potentially pave the way for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
