Hong Kong Customs has made a significant seizure of suspected gold bullion, marking the largest such bust in the city's history in terms of both weight and value. The estimated worth of the smuggled gold is approximately 46 million Hong Kong dollars (about $5.92 million).
During an inspection of an air cargo shipment destined for Japan, customs officers discovered approximately 64 kilograms of suspected gold bullion concealed within four cardboard boxes. The shipment was declared to contain toys, lamps, and hats.
The investigation into this smuggling operation is ongoing, and authorities have not ruled out the possibility of further arrests. Hong Kong Customs has reiterated its commitment to combating smuggling through risk assessment and intelligence analysis.
The public is reminded that smuggling is a serious offense under the Import and Export Ordinance, carrying a maximum penalty of 2 million Hong Kong dollars in fines and seven years in prison upon conviction.
