Two Skiers Dead in Separate Avalanches in Alberta Backcountry

Two skiers tragically lost their lives in separate avalanche incidents in Alberta's backcountry on Friday afternoon.

One fatality occurred near the Lake Louise Ski Resort, as confirmed by the RCMP. The victim, a male skier, was caught in an avalanche around 3 p.m. while traversing back to the resort after skiing Pipestone Bowl, which lies outside the resort's boundaries. The avalanche carried him approximately 50 meters and buried him under 150 to 200 centimeters of snow. A fellow skier managed to locate him using a transceiver and initiated first aid before emergency medical services arrived. Despite their efforts, the skier succumbed to his injuries.

The second incident took place in Kananaskis Country, where another skier perished in an avalanche near the Black Prince day use area in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park. This skier also triggered the avalanche, which carried him down the slope for 50-80 meters. His companions located him and called for help. Kananaskis Mountain Rescue responded and provided medical assistance, but the skier ultimately died from his injuries.

The RCMP and search and rescue teams are investigating both incidents. The Lake Louise Ski Resort reported that approximately 80 centimeters of snow had fallen during the week, and that isolated flurries were expected throughout the day. The resort also noted that the avalanche occurred on a 25-degree slope that propagated to steeper terrain overhead.

These tragic events serve as a stark reminder of the inherent risks associated with backcountry skiing and the importance of avalanche safety precautions. It is crucial to be properly equipped, trained, and informed about avalanche conditions before venturing into the backcountry.
