Dr. Oz Faces Questions on Medicaid Cuts During Confirmation Hearing
Dr. Mehmet Oz, President Donald Trump's nominee to lead Medicare and Medicaid, faced tough questions from senators during his confirmation hearing on Friday.
One of the key issues was whether Oz would support a House budget resolution that could lead to significant cuts to Medicaid. The budget plan, adopted by House Republicans, directs the Energy and Commerce Committee to identify at least $880 billion in mandatory spending cuts over the next 10 years, with the majority expected to come from the health program.
Oz, a former surgeon and TV personality, pledged to fight waste, fraud, and abuse in the healthcare system, an argument used by some Republicans to defend the possible cuts. However, he made no commitments to protect Medicaid funding.
Several Democratic senators expressed frustration with Oz's lack of commitment to opposing the cuts, noting that they would directly impact patients in their states. Senator Maria Cantwell of Washington directly asked Oz if he would cut Medicaid, while Senator Maggie Hassan of New Hampshire questioned how many children losing health insurance would be "acceptable" to him.
Oz seemed to suggest that Medicaid funds weren't being used efficiently, saying that the program "is the No. 1 expense item in most states." He also said he supports Medicaid work requirements but added that he was open to alternative qualifications, such as enrollment in an educational program.
The hearing also touched on Oz's controversial endorsements of marketed health products, such as the unproven weight loss supplement green coffee extract. However, these endorsements received little attention compared to the discussion on Medicaid cuts and other healthcare issues.
Oz spent a significant portion of the hearing discussing artificial intelligence and its potential role in fighting misuse of prior authorization, a tool used by health insurance companies that requires doctors and patients to get pre-approval for certain treatments. Oz believes that technology can streamline the process, making it as quick as a credit card transaction.
He also criticized Medicare Advantage, a type of health plan provided by private insurance companies, over concerns that insurers could be using a tactic called "upcoding" to boost their revenue. This is notable as Oz has previously advocated for privatizing Medicare and promoted a number of insurers under Medicare Advantage.
If confirmed, Oz will have a significant impact on the future of healthcare in the United States. His stance on Medicaid cuts, prior authorization, and Medicare Advantage will be closely watched by patients, healthcare providers, and policymakers alike.

How many children does Dr. Oz think it's acceptable to leave without healthcare? He needs to answer that question before we trust him with our nation's health. 🤔
