Businesses Sue Minneapolis Over George Floyd Square
Eight businesses in Minneapolis have filed a lawsuit against the city, alleging that officials abandoned the area surrounding George Floyd Square, leading to increased crime and lost revenue.
Following the 2020 police killing of George Floyd, protesters occupied the intersection of 38th Street and Chicago Avenue, creating a memorial and protest zone known as George Floyd Square. The area remained closed to car traffic for over a year.
The lawsuit claims that during this time, criminals took advantage of the lack of police presence, turning the area into a "no-go zone." Businesses report shootings, assaults, and extortion attempts, with authorities failing to respond to calls for help.
One business owner, Edwin Reed, claims a gang task force member told him the area was a "no-go zone" after a shooting near his shop. Another, a barber shop owner, says he had to drive himself to the hospital after being hit by a stray bullet because police wouldn't respond.
The city denies the allegations, stating that police provide 24/7 emergency response to the area and have assigned two officers to a dedicated beat. However, residents and news outlets have documented instances of police refusing to respond to calls near the square.
The lawsuit seeks $49 million in damages. City leaders remain divided over the future of George Floyd Square, with a recent city council vote to explore turning the area into a pedestrian plaza.

The city has a responsibility to protect its citizens and businesses. They are failing to do that.

This is outrageous! Businesses are suffering because the city is prioritizing virtue signaling over public safety. Shame on them!
