Sarah Hall, the mother of 14-year-old Scarlett, firmly maintains that her daughter's tragic death at the hands of her husband, Simon Vickers, was entirely accidental. Despite Vickers being convicted in January of murdering Scarlett and receiving a minimum prison sentence of fifteen years, Ms. Hall continues to stand by her husband, convinced he never meant to harm their child.
The tragic incident occurred on the evening of July 5 at their home in Darlington. According to Ms. Hall, the night had started as a typical and relaxed Friday evening. She, along with Scarlett and Vickers, was in the kitchen, preparing dinner. Playful teasing ensued, with Hall and Scarlett throwing grapes at each other in fun. When Hall accidentally pinched Vickers with kitchen tongs, Scarlett jokingly called her father a "wimp," prompting Vickers to playfully swipe the tongs across the countertop towards his daughter.
Ms. Hall explains her belief that during this playful motion, Vickers unintentionally caught a knife, sending it pointing outward just as Scarlett moved forward, causing her to collide with and be fatally stabbed by the blade. Ms. Hall's account strongly contests the prosecution's version, which depicted Vickers plunging an 11cm-deep knife wound directly into Scarlett's chest—a scenario supported by the home office pathologist's report, which stated that such a wound required deliberate force and could not have been accidental.
Despite Simon Vickers offering varying accounts in court about the exact events preceding the fatal wound, the jury ultimately found his defense unconvincing. The trial judge, Justice Cotter, criticized Vickers' testimony as "wholly implausible," concluding that the stabbing had been "a momentary but devastating act of anger," even though he acknowledged the absence of premeditation or intent to kill. In sentencing, Justice Cotter expressed sympathy for Vickers' obvious devastation and remorse but emphasized the severity of the act.
For her part, Sarah Hall deeply disagrees with the judge's description of her husband's actions as driven by anger, describing such conclusions as "absurd." She maintains adamantly that there had been no tension, arguments, or anger on that evening and describes the situation as a horrific incident that has spiraled into a "never-ending nightmare."
Furthermore, Ms. Hall rejected any speculation or suggestions following the trial that Vickers had exhibited abusive behavior in the past. She affirmed emphatically that her husband had always been supportive and compassionate, never controlling or violent in their relationship.
Now, Simon Vickers' sentence faces scrutiny and reconsideration. Solicitor General Lucy Rigby KC has called for a review of his punishment by the Court of Appeal, arguing that the current sentence may be unnecessarily lenient given the grave nature of the crime.

Sarah knows her husband best. If she believes he's innocent, who are we to judge?
Karamba
Review the sentence? Absolutely! He should be locked up for good for what he did. This wasn't an accident.

This is a family tragedy, not a crime. Let's show some compassion and support for all involved.

He should rot in jail for what he did. No excuse for taking an innocent life.

The prosecution is making this worse. They should focus on healing and supporting the family, not seeking revenge.

I believe Sarah. This sounds like a terrible accident. Who hasn't playfully swiped something at someone else?

I don't see how this could be considered anything but an accident. Let's not jump to conclusions.

Ignoring the evidence and siding with the murderer? What a twisted way to grieve.
