Canada's short-track speed skaters are gearing up for the biggest event of their season, the world championships in Beijing. This competition is more meaningful than other years with the 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics just around the corner.
Canadian head coach Marc Gagnon sees the world championships as a practice for the Olympics. He knows the pressure will be high, but he believes his team is ready.
Canada's skaters hope to bring home valuable big-race experience from the world championships. They want to use this event to prepare for the Olympics and compete at their best.
Canada's men's team had a dominant season on the World Tour, winning the inaugural team Crystal Globe. William Dandjinou led the charge, becoming the first Canadian to capture the men's Crystal Globe.
On the women's side, Danaé Blais and Florence Brunelle took major strides this season. Blais placed third in the overall 1,000 standings and won her first World Tour gold medal. Brunelle won her first gold on the World Tour and leapt to third in the 500 standings.
Gagnon believes his squad can aim much higher this year and next. He believes Canada has the team and the talent to win more medals than usual at the Olympics.

Beijing world championships as meaningful prep? More likely we'll just hear excuses after they fail to deliver.

Sorry to say it, but I doubt they'll gain any 'valuable experience'—just another excuse when they lose.

Every year we hear the same empty promises from coaches and athletes. Haven't we learned yet?

Annoying how athletes always claim they're 'dominant' one minute, then struggle on big stage later.

Canadian speed skaters always promise greatness, then fade quietly at the Olympics. Seen this story before.

Winning a 'Crystal Globe' sounds impressive, yet somehow Canada rarely follows through at Olympic level.

Typical overconfidence from Canadian sports. Hopefully they'll spend less time bragging and more time practicing.
