Carlos Alcaraz, the current world number three, has stated that reclaiming the top spot in the rankings is not his primary focus in the coming months. The Spaniard is instead prioritizing avoiding any additional pressure as he seeks to rediscover his best form.
Alcaraz recently dominated Grigor Dimitrov in a 6-1, 6-1 victory at the Indian Wells tournament, advancing to the quarter-finals. He is aiming for his third consecutive title at the event, a feat previously achieved by Roger Federer (2004-06) and Novak Djokovic (2014-16).
While winning the Indian Wells title would not propel Alcaraz to the top of the rankings, currently occupied by Jannik Sinner and Alexander Zverev, it could position him for a strong run during the European claycourt swing, where he will defend his French Open crown.
"I'm not thinking much about recovering the number one in two or three months. That could make me feel extra pressure," Alcaraz, who previously held the top spot for 36 weeks, told reporters.
With Sinner serving a doping ban until May 4, Alcaraz is expected to be among the main contenders in upcoming tournaments. However, he emphasizes a day-by-day approach.
"If I'm doing the right things, if I'm focused on every day and the things I have to improve, the result is going to be there and then the number one is going to come after," he added.
Alcaraz's immediate focus remains on the Indian Wells tournament, where he aims to reach the final or even lift the trophy. His next opponent is Argentine Francisco Cerundolo, a player he acknowledges as a complete player who excels on all surfaces.
"He's playing great. I don't know which surface is his favourite, clay or hardcourt. He plays really well on both. Even grass, too," Alcaraz said.
"That means he's a complete player. He can play really good tennis on every surface ... I'll have to be really focused on my tennis. I'll try to play aggressively with passion.
"It's going to be a difficult one.

He needs to stop making excuses and start proving himself again. This isn't the attitude of a champion.
