Man Charged with Murder in Boon Lay Flat

A 59-year-old man, Abdul Rani Bin Md Ariffin, was charged with murder on Thursday, March 13th, two days after another man was found dead in a Boon Lay flat. The victim, identified as Abdul Rahman Mohamad Ariffin, 57, was found lying motionless at the 11th-floor flat at Block 187 Boon Lay Avenue. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Abdul Rani appeared in the State Courts via video link dressed in a white polo shirt. He is accused of causing the death of Abdul Rahman at around 4am in the Boon Lay flat. The method of murder was not specified.

CNA understands that the victim was Abdul Rani's brother.

The prosecution requested that Abdul Rani be remanded for medical examination and psychiatric evaluation to determine if he was suffering from any mental impairment that could have affected his responsibility for the alleged act.

Abdul Rani, who was unrepresented, replied that he had nothing to say when asked through a Malay interpreter.

The judge remanded the accused for psychiatric evaluation in view of the seriousness of the charge. He will next appear in court on April 3rd.

The police were alerted to the case at about 11.35am on Tuesday. The unit where the body was found was cordoned off, and a body bag was later carried out.

A neighbor said that two men and two women lived in the unit, but they did not hear anything unusual before the incident. Another neighbor saw a man sitting on a stool and handcuffed behind his back.

The offense of murder carries the death penalty.

The family deserves answers, but we should avoid fueling public anger and vengeance. Justice needs to be served, but it needs to be fair and just.

Instead of focusing on anger and retribution, let's channel our energy towards preventing such tragedies in the future. We need more investment in mental health services and conflict resolution programs.

The death penalty should not be an automatic response to every murder case. There are instances where life imprisonment may be a more appropriate punishment.
