McRae Vows to Improve Role Model Behavior After GWS Incident
Collingwood coach Craig McRae has acknowledged that his sideline interaction with a GWS player was inappropriate and has vowed to become a better role model. While he escaped sanction from the AFL, McRae received an official warning for congratulating Toby Bedford after the Giants tagger gave away a free kick in Collingwood's 52-point loss on Sunday.
The incident sparked immediate criticism from GWS coach Adam Kingsley, leading to an AFL investigation. Although no further action was taken against McRae, he expressed regret for his actions.
"I'm cheeky. I've got a great relationship with Kingers, so I have a bit of banter with him," McRae explained. "But then I realised really quickly [it was wrong], particularly when my wife tells me the next day, 'You can't do that Craig.'"
McRae acknowledged the negative impact his behavior had on the game's image and pledged to improve his conduct. "I apologize for that. I don't think it's good for the game," he stated.
He emphasized the importance of protecting his players while maintaining appropriate behavior. "I love to protect our players. But there's a level in there that's within the role model that I want to be," he said.
The AFL has taken a strong stance against coaches confronting rival players, as evidenced by the $20,000 fine imposed on Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley last year for his heated exchange with Hawthorn players.
McRae's focus now shifts to the upcoming match against Port Adelaide at the MCG on Saturday night. The Magpies will be looking to bounce back from their loss to the Giants, with Josh Daicos, Jeremy Howe, and Jordan De Goey all facing potential absences due to injury or fitness concerns.

I appreciate McRae's commitment to protecting his players. It's important for coaches to stand up for their players.

It's important to remember that McRae is human and makes mistakes like everyone else. Let's not crucify him for one bad decision.

I'm losing respect for McRae and Collingwood. They need to take a stand against this kind of behavior.

I think McRae's intentions were good, even if his actions weren't. He was just trying to lighten the mood in a tense situation.

I don't think McRae deserves to be suspended. He's a good coach and this was an isolated incident.
