SDF and Syrian Government Reach Agreement, Marking a Turning Point in the Conflict

SDF and Syrian Government Reach Agreement

In a significant development, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a Kurdish-led coalition that partnered with the United States in the fight against ISIS, has agreed to integrate with the interim Syrian government forces. This agreement marks a turning point in the Syrian conflict, bringing together two major factions that previously held opposing alliances.

The deal was reached after days of deadly sectarian violence between government forces and supporters of the deposed Assad regime. While the SDF remained largely uninvolved in these clashes, it has long held opposition to both the old and new Syrian leadership. This new truce will see the SDF and the interim government join forces, despite their seemingly contradictory past allegiances.

The agreement, reached during a meeting in Damascus between interim Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa and SDF leader Mazloum Abdi, will see the SDF cede control of civil and military institutions in northeastern Syria, including an airport and oil and gas fields. The Syrian government has guaranteed the rights of all Syrians to participate in the political process, regardless of their religious or ethnic background.

SDF leader Abdi hailed the agreement as a "real opportunity to build a new Syria," while President al-Sharaa vowed to hold accountable those responsible for the recent violence. This pact represents a crucial step for al-Sharaa, who has pledged to lead a more unified and inclusive Syria, representing the country's diverse ethnic and religious groups.

The agreement could also help alleviate international concerns that al-Sharaa might revert to his past identity as a jihadist leader with ties to ISIS and Al Qaeda. These concerns arose due to the recent violence, which resulted in the deaths of hundreds of civilians, primarily from the Alawite community.

Experts believe this pact is a positive step forward, offering reassurance to Syrians and symbolizing unity. However, significant challenges remain, including the ongoing conflict with Turkey and Turkish-backed Syrian rebel groups. Despite these challenges, the agreement between the SDF and the Syrian government offers hope for a more peaceful and unified future for Syria.

Hundreds of Alawite civilians recently died under this interim government and now SDF sides with killers. Unacceptable!

The Kurdish fighters shed blood for freedom, not for surrendering their future to questionable politicians.

Did the SDF forget the Assad regime’s atrocities? Joining hands with such people is unforgivable.
