Ford Suspends Surcharge, Carney Vows Retaliation to Tariffs

Ontario Premier Suspends Electricity Export Surcharge After Conversation with U.S. Secretary of Commerce

Ontario Premier Doug Ford has suspended the 25% surcharge on electricity exports to three U.S. states, originally imposed in response to tariffs enacted by President Trump. This decision follows a "productive conversation" with U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick about the economic relationship between the two countries.

Ford and Lutnick agreed to meet in Washington on Thursday alongside the United States Trade Representative to discuss a renewed free-trade agreement between the U.S., Mexico, and Canada ahead of the April 2 reciprocal tariff deadline. Federal Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc will also join the Premier for these meetings.

Trump Doubles Down on Tariffs, Carney Vows Retaliation

Despite the suspension of the electricity surcharge, Trump remains committed to enacting 25% tariffs on Canadian and Mexican goods on April 2. This move is part of a broader trade war agenda that has sparked significant tension between the countries.

Incoming Prime Minister Mark Carney has promised a strong response to these latest tariffs. He has stated that his government will maintain Canadian tariffs until the U.S. demonstrates respect and makes credible commitments to free and fair trade. Carney also emphasized that his government's response will prioritize minimizing impact on Canadians while supporting affected workers.
