The Whitecaps Head to Mexico for a Hostile Match
The Vancouver Whitecaps are preparing for a challenging match against CF Monterrey in Mexico this week. While the game won't be played in Monterrey's home stadium, the intense atmosphere at Estadio Corona in Torreon will still favor the LIGA MX side.
Whitecaps midfielder Pedro Vite sees the hostile environment as a motivator. "If I'm at a stadium full of people and all the fans are shouting at us, then it's better for us," he said. "It motivates us to play well, to make the plays we want to make."
The Whitecaps are in a solid position heading into the second leg of their CONCACAF Champions Cup series against Monterrey. They battled Rayados to a 1-1 draw in the first leg last week and are undefeated in their last five outings across all competitions.
Vite has been a key contributor to the team's success, scoring a goal in their 4-1 victory over the Portland Timbers and providing assists in each of their other league games. "On a personal level, I feel really good," he said. "I feel like I'm playing at a very high level, and I have a lot to go for this team."
The Whitecaps will need to be at their best to win the series. They need to score and either win the game or draw by two or more goals. Head coach Jesper Sorensen acknowledges the challenge but remains confident. "We will not be passive, but patient is more the right word," he said. "We know what we have to do."
The absence of captain Ryan Gauld due to a knee injury will be a setback for the Whitecaps. However, Sorensen emphasizes the importance of collective effort. "We have to play somebody else," he said. "And that's just how football works."
The Whitecaps will face a tough Monterrey defense, potentially including star center back Sergio Ramos. Sorensen expects a different approach from Monterrey in the second leg. "We were able to create chances against a team like Monterrey," he said. "We just have to take and strike them better, of course."
Despite the challenges, Sorensen remains optimistic. "I would expect that we can also go down there and surprise them a little bit.
