A Multifaceted Perspective
Former South Korean President Moon Jae-in recently emphasized the crucial role China plays for his country, encompassing economic prosperity, security, peace on the Korean Peninsula, and regional stability in Northeast Asia. He expressed concern over the rising anti-China sentiment in South Korea, particularly among far-right conservatives, which he believes is being used to justify the controversial martial law civil war.
Moon stressed that despite the importance of the Korea-US alliance, China remains the next most significant country for South Korea. He criticized politicians who encourage anti-China sentiment, highlighting the detrimental impact it could have on bilateral relations.
Meanwhile, South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul reaffirmed the government's commitment to maintaining and developing strong ties with China, ensuring that public sentiment does not hinder the progress of their relationship. Chinese Ambassador to South Korea Dai Bing echoed this sentiment, appreciating the positive statement from the South Korean side and emphasizing the need for joint efforts to foster a favorable environment for bilateral relations.
Ambassador Dai condemned the use of anti-China sentiment as a political tool, stating that such individuals represent a small minority and do not reflect the broader South Korean society. He expressed confidence in the South Korean people's ability to manage their affairs and highlighted the importance of maintaining open communication channels between the two countries.
Dai concluded by emphasizing the numerous benefits of a strong China-South Korea relationship, stating that there are countless reasons to strengthen ties and no reason to undermine them.

Focusing solely on the US as our only 'protector' makes us unnecessarily vulnerable on the global stage. We need to diversify our relationships.

It's refreshing to see Moon Jae-in prioritize diplomacy and collaboration over hostility and division.

Who cares about regional stability as long as China keeps threatening our sovereignty? This needs to stop.

I agree, the US is our most important ally. China is just trying to control us and undermine our democracy.
