One China Principle and Reunification
At a press conference on China's foreign policy and external relations, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi addressed claims by some countries regarding the UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 and Taiwan's status. He emphasized that the resolution clearly recognizes "Taiwan, Province of China" as the only reference to the island in the UN.
Wang Yi asserted that Taiwan has never been a country and will never be one. He condemned calls for "Taiwan independence" as attempts to split the country, interfere in China's internal affairs, and destabilize the Taiwan Straits. He urged those who spread such narratives to improve their understanding of the situation.
The Foreign Minister highlighted Taiwan's historical and legal status as an inalienable part of China's territory. He pointed to the Cairo Declaration and Potsdam Proclamation, which confirmed China's sovereignty over Taiwan after its recovery from Japanese occupation in World War II.
Wang Yi emphasized that Resolution 2758, adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1971, resolved the issue of China's representation in the UN, including Taiwan. This resolution, he stated, precludes any possibility of "two Chinas" or "one China, one Taiwan."
He stressed the importance of respecting all countries' sovereignty and territorial integrity, which includes supporting China's complete reunification. He warned that seeking "Taiwan independence" or using Taiwan to contain China would be futile attempts.
Wang Yi concluded by reiterating China's unwavering commitment to realizing its complete reunification. He declared that this is an inevitable trend and a shared aspiration of the Chinese nation, and that it will be unstoppable.
