China Opposes Japan's Move on Taiwan's Place of Origin
China has voiced strong opposition to Japan's recent decision to allow individuals from Taiwan to list "Taiwan" instead of "China" as their place of origin. This move, according to China, violates the one-China principle and constitutes interference in its internal affairs.
The change to Japan's family registration system, announced in mid-February, will take effect in May. It allows individuals from Taiwan to choose "Taiwan" as their place of origin, instead of being forced to choose "China."
China's Taiwan Affairs Office spokesperson, Zhu Fenglian, stated that this move attempts to create "two Chinas" or "one China, one Taiwan," which is a serious violation of the one-China principle. She emphasized that there is only one China, and Taiwan is a part of it.
Zhu also reminded Japan of its historical responsibility for the Taiwan question and urged it to act with caution, adhere to the one-China principle, and handle Taiwan-related issues prudently.
China's Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Guo Jiakun, echoed these sentiments, stating that Japan has a historical responsibility to the Chinese people due to its past aggression and colonial rule over Taiwan. He urged Japan to abide by the one-China principle and refrain from actions that could further complicate the Taiwan issue.
China's strong opposition to Japan's decision highlights the sensitivity of the Taiwan issue and the importance of adhering to the one-China principle. It also serves as a reminder of the historical tensions between China and Japan over Taiwan.

China's reaction is completely justified. Japan is playing with fire and could ignite a major conflict.

Ridiculous. Taiwan belongs to China, end of story. Japan needs to stop meddling in their affairs.

Shameful revisionism from the Japanese government. They should stand by their commitment to the one-China principle.

This decision by Japan shows that they prioritize their interests over peace and stability in the region. Disgraceful!

This is an important step towards acknowledging Taiwan's distinct identity. 1 China, 1 Taiwan = Reality.
