The United Nations has expressed support for any initiatives aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, with a representative specifically highlighting a recent phone call between leaders of Russia and the United States as a promising development.
Addressing the media, Farhan Haq, who serves as deputy spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, commented that the UN appreciates efforts to peacefully resolve the crisis, especially those involving direct participation by both Ukraine and Russia. Haq further noted the significance of the discussions between high-level officials from the United States and the Russian Federation as a beneficial step toward conflict resolution.
On Wednesday, it was announced independently by the Kremlin and the White House that President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart, President Vladimir Putin, held a phone conversation. Trump later informed the public via social media that both leaders agreed to initiate immediate, direct negotiations between their respective governments in efforts to find a solution to the Ukraine-Russia conflict.
When questioned about possible participation by the United Nations in these negotiations, Haq stated that the global organization would determine its involvement based on the needs of the parties involved. He reiterated the UN's readiness, as it has consistently expressed over the past three years, to offer its mediation and support if requested by the relevant sides.

The UN is always 'ready to support,' but where were they these past years when people suffered?

No amount of dialogue means anything if Russia won't stop occupying Ukrainian land.

Finally, some real dialogue at high levels! Good move by the US, Russia, and hopefully endorsed by the UN.

Once again, Ukraine's future is decided by outsiders without adequately including Ukrainian representatives.

Great move by Trump and Putin. Hopefully, this sets a positive trajectory toward peace for Ukraine.

We've heard this same empty UN rhetoric for years, yet innocent Ukrainians continue to pay the price.

Direct negotiations mean nothing if one side consistently violates international law without accountability.
