Taiwan Affairs Office Dismisses Lai Ching-te's Claim of Taiwan as a Chess Player

In response to remarks made by Lai Ching-te, Taiwan's regional leader, regarding Taiwan's role in international politics, Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, delivered a strong rebuke. Lai had previously expressed confidence during a February 19 Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) meeting, emphasizing Taiwan's role as a proactive "chess player" rather than merely a passive "chess piece." He argued that Taiwan was capable of skillfully managing shifting global dynamics.

However, Zhu dismissed Lai's assertion, describing it as "self-deceptive and laughable." She emphasized that the DPP has historically displayed dependence upon external powers, leaving it unable to credibly assert an independent "chess player" role. According to Zhu, Taiwan under the DPP's leadership is effectively controlled by external forces, contradicting Lai's claim.

Zhu further cautioned the DPP authorities regarding the consequences of continuing to serve the interests of outside entities. She stated unequivocally that the DPP risks becoming "discarded pieces" if they persist in functioning as pawns rather than genuinely autonomous participants in international affairs.

Taiwan's future is at stake. It's time for the DPP to put the interests of the people first and abandon their dangerous game of international politics.

Zhu Fenglian's comments are an attempt to bully Taiwan and silence its voice.

Lai Ching-te is delusional if he thinks Taiwan can be a "chess player" on the world stage. It's a small island with no real power.
