Australian snowboard cross athlete and three-time Olympian Belle Brockhoff has encountered a severe setback after a serious crash during an FIS World Cup competition held in Gudauri, Georgia. In Saturday's event, she fell heavily during the small final and required immediate evacuation by helicopter due to the severe nature of the crash.
Subsequent medical scans showed that Brockhoff had sustained a fracture to her L1 vertebrae, a serious spinal injury. Quickly transported to Greece, the 32-year-old underwent emergency surgery to address the damage caused by her fall. She currently remains under the careful attention of medical specialists working closely with Australia's Winter Olympic organization.
Geoff Lipshut, CEO of the Olympic Winter Institute of Australia, reassured fans that the organization is cooperating extensively with medical personnel in Greece to ensure Brockhoff gets excellent treatment. He emphasized that further decisions about recovery and rehabilitation plans will be examined in cooperation with the athlete once the initial post-surgery recuperation stage is complete, in around 48 hours. Lipshut added positive news about Brockhoff's spirits, highlighting she is being supported by her partner, who traveled to Greece following the crash.
Brockhoff, who previously won gold at the snowboard cross mixed team World Championships alongside teammate Jarryd Hughes in 2021, is not new to the risks of her sport. At the Winter Olympics in Beijing, just last year, another crash forced her off the mountain on a stretcher during quarterfinal competition.
This recent incident further compounds the challenges faced by Australia's winter athletes this season, already significantly affected by injuries. Prominent medal hopefuls including moguls champion Jakara Anthony, who sustained a broken collarbone during an event in Sweden last year, and fellow snowboarders Val Guseli and Tess Cody, have also been sidelined with knee and concussion injuries respectively.

🤕 Seriously concerned about the number of injuries this season. Are the competition schedules or courses to blame for this spike?
