Nine Hospitalized in Singapore After Using Unregistered Medicines
Nine individuals in Singapore were hospitalized for severe skin conditions after using unregistered medications known as modafinil or armodafinil. These potent drugs are not registered in Singapore but are available in some countries with a doctor's prescription for specific medical conditions like narcolepsy, a sleep disorder.
The affected individuals, seven men and two women aged 18 to 57, were hospitalized between February 2024 and February 2025. They had obtained modafinil and armodafinil from street peddlers in Geylang or from friends. Some reported taking these products to improve alertness or boost energy, while one individual used them as "supplements to boost energy and health."
Six individuals developed Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS), a life-threatening skin condition characterized by blistering and severe peeling of the skin and mucous membranes. One of them, a man in his 40s, also experienced severe oral ulcers, leaving him unable to eat or speak for several days.
The Health Sciences Authority (HSA) urges the public to avoid purchasing or consuming unregistered medicines, as they may contain harmful ingredients or contaminants. These products can pose serious health risks, as demonstrated by the recent cases of SJS.
If you have any concerns about your health or the use of medications, please consult a licensed healthcare professional. They can provide you with accurate information and guidance on safe and effective treatment options.

This is just sad. I hope these people make a full recovery. No "energy boost" is worth this.

It's important to be aware of the potential side effects of any medication, even if it's available over the counter.

This is why unregulated markets are dangerous. People need to understand the risks before popping pills.
