Shanghai Port Coach Kevin Muscat Determined for Asian Champions League Success

Shanghai Port head coach Kevin Muscat has expressed his unwavering determination to achieve success at the continental level, as his team prepares for a crucial encounter in the Asian Champions League. Currently trailing 1-0 against Yokohama F Marinos, Muscat prepares for an emotional second-leg return to his former club's stadium this Tuesday. Despite finding extensive success domestically across different leagues, Muscat is motivated to further enhance his professional achievements by leading his team deeper into Asia's premier club competition.

Speaking about his coaching philosophy, Muscat emphasized that winning titles has always been central to his career and identity, describing the desire as deeply embedded in his personality and DNA. He clarified, however, that winning trophies depends largely upon consistent performances over the long term. At this moment, his priority lies in preparing the Shanghai Port squad for high-level performance, which he believes will naturally bring results and recognition.

Muscat has an accomplished history as a manager, having already secured titles in three distinct national leagues during his career. He guided Australia's Melbourne Victory to league championships in both 2015 and 2018, followed by success with Yokohama F Marinos, winning the J-League title in 2022 and the Japanese Super Cup thereafter. In his first season with Shanghai Port, he notably completed a domestic double by winning the Chinese Super League and FA Cup.

However, Muscat's remarkable coaching career still lacks continental silverware. Although he admits the importance of progressing further in prestigious international competitions, he sees this as a continuation rather than proving himself afresh. He credits the commitment of his players and the cohesive work of the team for their recent improvements in Asian competitions, yet acknowledges the necessity of demonstrating their quality consistently.

Reflecting on the last game against Yokohama, Muscat highlighted that despite their narrow deficit, his team had created opportunities to change the result. As they prepare for the crucial second leg match away from home, Muscat remains confident in his player's abilities, pointing out the importance of making use of this opportunity to showcase their abilities on a bigger stage and achieve the recognition that their dedication deserves.
