Singapore to Consolidate Sports Institutions into Single Entity
The Singapore Sport Institute (SSI), National Youth Sports Institute (NYSI), and Singapore Sports School (SSP) will be merged into a single entity, creating a unified structure for sports development in the country. This was announced by Minister for Culture, Community, and Youth Edwin Tong in Parliament on March 10, 2023.
The consolidation will begin with the integration of SSI and NYSI in April 2023. The SSP will join the new entity in a few years, while retaining its status as a school and its distinct brand and identity.
This move aims to streamline functions and create a more integrated and effective support framework for athletes, from youth development to senior levels. It will also enhance service delivery and provide better visibility and assurance to athletes throughout their sporting journey.
The Ministry of Culture, Community, and Youth (MCCY) emphasizes that SSP's mission of providing academic pathways and support to student-athletes will remain unchanged. The consolidation will also strengthen partnerships with National Sports Associations (NSAs) on athlete and pathway development.
All Team Singapore athletes will continue to receive their current level of support by NYSI and SSI following the consolidation. No retrenchments are expected in any of the organizations.
