A Mixed Bag for the ICC
The much-anticipated return of the Champions Trophy to the cricket calendar did not go according to plan for the International Cricket Council (ICC). The tournament, held in Pakistan for the first time since 1996, faced several challenges, including geopolitical tensions, lack of buzz in the host nation, and mediocre cricket overall.
One of the major issues was the participation of India, a key factor in the commercial success of any cricket tournament. Due to strained political relations between India and Pakistan, the Indian board (BCCI) stuck to their policy of not touring Pakistan. This led to a "hybrid model" where India played their matches in Dubai, while Pakistan will play in a neutral venue for any ICC event until 2027.
While India's participation was secured, the scheduling of the tournament raised concerns about fairness. India, who had a week's rest between their last two group matches, played all their matches in Dubai, while other teams like Afghanistan had to play twice in three days. This led to accusations that the ICC was prioritizing finances over fairness.
On the field, the cricket was largely mediocre. Defending champions Pakistan looked under-prepared, finishing bottom of their group without a single win. Australia fielded a second-string team due to injuries, while New Zealand's Rachin Ravindra was the standout performer, winning the player-of-the-tournament award.
Despite the challenges, the tournament did have some positives. Reigning T20 world champions India continued their dominance in white-ball cricket, winning the final against New Zealand. Afghanistan impressed on their Champions Trophy debut, while England are searching for a new captain after their winless campaign.
Overall, the 2023 Champions Trophy was a mixed bag for the ICC. While the tournament served as a fundraiser, it also highlighted the challenges of organizing a major cricket event in a politically charged environment. The ICC will need to address these issues if they want the Champions Trophy to regain its former glory.

This Champions Trophy was a complete disaster! The ICC needs to get their act together and stop prioritizing money over fairness.

The ICC is always learning and improving, and I'm confident they'll make the next Champions Trophy even better.

The scheduling wasn't perfect, but it's not like the ICC could have predicted everything.

The scheduling was ridiculous! Some teams had to play twice in three days, while India had a whole week off. What a joke!

India's absence really hurt the tournament. It's just not the same without them.
