Beijing Schools to Usher in AI Education with New Curriculum and Teaching Methods

Beijing Schools to Introduce AI Courses and Teaching Methods

Starting in September, schools in Beijing will incorporate artificial intelligence (AI) into their primary and secondary school curriculum. This initiative aims to cultivate young talent and drive growth in the rapidly advancing field of AI.

In a statement released on its official website, Chinese education authorities outlined plans for schools to "explore and build" AI courses. These courses will be integrated into various aspects of the educational system, including after-school services, club activities, research, and other educational programs.

To develop comprehensive AI courses, schools will collaborate with leading enterprises, universities, research institutions, and industry associations. Additionally, AI tools will be utilized to explore new classroom scenarios, incorporating AI into teaching methods and utilizing AI learning research and teaching assistants for personalized learning.

Schools are required to provide at least eight hours of AI education per year. This can be achieved through independent courses or by integrating AI into existing curriculum, such as IT and science classes. This initiative demonstrates China's commitment to fostering AI talent and ensuring its future competitiveness in this critical field.

Does anyone seriously think 8 annual hours of AI education will truly equip children meaningfully? This looks more like symbolic posturing.
