Mark Carney Elected Prime Minister of Canada, Vows to Stand Up to US in Trade War

Mark Carney, the former central banker who led the response to financial crises in North America and the UK, has been elected as the next Prime Minister of Canada. He takes on the role as Canada faces a potentially catastrophic trade war with the US, its closest ally and largest trading partner.

Carney addressed the nation, stating that Canada will not be part of the United States in any way, shape, or form. He emphasized that Canadians are always ready when someone else drops the gloves, and that Canada will win in trade as in hockey.

Outgoing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed his pride in his government's legacy, but warned of dangerous times for the country. He emphasized that democracy and freedom are not givens, and that even Canada is not a given.

Carney will be the second Prime Minister in Canadian history without a seat in the House of Commons. He is also the first Liberal Prime Minister from western Canada.

Carney has been pitching himself as an outsider, despite his long-standing ties to the Liberal party. His victory has energized the incumbent Liberals, and they are now looking increasingly likely to win the next general election.

Carney has stated that his government will keep tariffs on American goods until the US shows respect. He has also attacked the Conservative leader, Pierre Poilievre, calling him a career politician who is running a divisive campaign.

Carney has faced some challenges in moving from the corporate world to politics. He has waffled over his role at the investment firm Brookfield Asset Management, when it moved its headquarters from Toronto to New York. He has promised to put his substantial assets into a blind trust immediately.

Former Prime Minister Jean Chrétien has jokingly called on Trump to receive Canada's highest honors for uniting Canadians like never before. He emphasized that Canada will never join the United States, and that no one will starve Canada into submission.

Why is a former banker qualified at all to lead us through a political crisis? His credential is managing banks, not countries.

Carney's 'tough guy' hockey talk makes for cute soundbites, but won't save our economy or build diplomacy.

I trust Carney to lead us intelligently—the man guided the Bank of England through turbulent times after all.

Chrétien’s comment is hilarious. Proud to see Canadians uniting and standing firm together.
