"Jordan Poole's Strong Return Lifts Wizards to Narrow Victory Against Raptors"

Jordan Poole made an impressive return Saturday night, scoring 34 points after recovering from an elbow injury and guiding the Washington Wizards to a closely contested 118-117 victory against the Toronto Raptors. The outcome of the game hinged on a late review, which confirmed that Jamal Shead's final shot for Toronto, originally believed to be a game-winner, came just after time had expired.

In addition to Poole's standout performance, Bilal Coulibaly contributed significantly to Washington's success with 18 points. Khris Middleton and Corey Kispert each provided crucial support, contributing 12 points apiece. Meanwhile, Richaun Holmes collected a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds, and Alex Sarr also posted an impactful double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds, helping the Wizards secure their second consecutive win.

For Toronto, RJ Barrett led in scoring with 23 points, supported by Jakob Poeltl, who scored 21 points. Scottie Barnes had a strong night as well, adding 18 points. Jared Rhoden scored 13, while Jamal Shead and Jamison Battle each finished with 11 points apiece, showcasing Toronto's balanced scoring effort despite the loss.

Early in the contest, Washington aimed to counter Toronto’s quick pace and defensive pressure by playing aggressively and running the floor. This strategy yielded initial success, although the Raptors closed the first quarter strong, taking a 39-33 advantage thanks to a 7-1 scoring run.

Toronto continued in the second quarter, claiming a 10-point advantage after an unusual series of events where Barnes missed a dunk, but Jamison Battle scored from the corner after grabbing the bounce off the miss. The Wizards, however, responded effectively, shrinking the Raptors' lead with a 9-2 run. Later, Marcus Smart and Jordan Poole teamed up for critical points that allowed Washington to lead 69-65 at halftime.

In the third quarter, Washington capitalized on Toronto's turnovers and missed opportunities, aggressively pursuing rebounds to build a 13-point advantage. Yet, the Raptors maintained their resolve and managed to close the gap to six points entering the final period.

Poeltl sparked Toronto's comeback effort early in the fourth quarter, reducing the Wizards' lead to one point before Poole stepped up again, hitting consecutive three-pointers to give Washington breathing room. However, the Raptors persisted, narrowing the deficit to just one point with a little over a minute remaining. The thrilling contest ended with Toronto unable to convert their final possession, as Shead's game-winning floater went through the basket a fraction of a second too late, securing Washington's slim victory.

Toronto led throughout most of the game and almost pulled off the win despite playing the second quarter with only seven players. They should be considered unlucky not to win this one.

This article fails to mention the poor free throw shooting by Washington which could have cost them the game. They went 66% from the line compared to Toronto's 80%.

Jamal Shead deserved more than just being mentioned here. His 11 points for the Raptors came off the bench and included the near game-winning buzzer beater.
